EDUCATION:

Chehalis High School; Centralia Community College; Western Washington University. Degree in Pre-Law; Degree in Sociology.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

Rock Binders, Inc. 1999 - now.  Principal/Partner with Norm Pugh and together, we are responsible for everything.

Ultrapave, 1993 – 1998. General Manager, Western Operations. In charge of most aspects of the company for Western North America, excluding Mexico. Budget – 600K. Staff – 6.

McCall Asphalt. 1988 – 1992. JAFS.   According to Bob and Jim, during these years I was Just Another (um...) Salesman.  (Our volume did go from 75K to over 130K though!)

Asphalt Supply & Service, 1985 – 1988. As General Manager for the Northwestern operations in charge of plant operations and marketing for polymerized asphalt and commercial asphalt distribution. Staff – 5.

Lakeside Industries, 1976 – 1985. Started as a Teamster, went salary and worked my way down to General Superintendent.  I was in charge of all aspects of construction operations out of the Longview, Washington office of Lakeside Industries. Responsible for all aspects of paving, production, costing analysis, and personnel.

PROJECTS & ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Ultrapave – Established (with the help of Don Phillips, may God bless his wonderful, happy soul) marketing, warehouse, and production operations based in Ridgefield, WA. Responsible for staffing personnel, operations and sales for existing latex products (yes, Bill Liddle built the lab and organized the production QA/QC). Championed the development and implementation of the Ultracote Polymeric Aggregate Treatment which involved product   development, coordinating equipment manufacture, product distribution points, marketing development (including literature) and pricing strategies. (It seemed at times as though I were the Lone Ranger, but I am certain Gil Tarver and Lew Lewandowski, along with others, helped a little.)

McCall Oil, Portland, OR – Although some people there would say all I did was watch, I believed that I was responsible for extensive terminal upgrades for processing and delivery systems of commercial and modified asphalt materials. Standing around watching others do the installation of Waugh blending system for streamlining the old gravity loading facility, installation of processing units, building and staffing a full-service asphalt laboratory (which was actually done by my old friend Bill Liddle), marketing of asphalt materials, including the PBA specification material. (Yes, I sat through all those boring damn meetings to help develop the PBA, and subsequently PG, specifications. Part of Barney Vallerga's Posse, often the voice of common sense, which most of "Academia" lacks.)

Asphalt Supply & Service, Vancouver, WA – Although Julian did most of the modernization of existing facility which involved upgrading a lube-oil facility into a facility with the capability of handling asphalt materials; installation of polymer asphalt equipment I did help a little; (I hired Bill Liddle from FHWA to run our lab) and I may have had a hand in developing a market for Polymerized AC in the Pacific NW and all facets of marketing and distribution.
